Kelvin Mason – Senior Consultant

Wessex Grounds Services - Kelvin Victor MasonKelvin Victor Mason - Consultant at WGSWessex Grounds Services are absolutely delighted to announce the newest member of the WGS team and our Senior Consultant, Kelvin Mason.

Kelvin is an excellent horticulturist and he and Stephen have worked together previously at Brighton Parks Department.  His first project is working on a local authority plant nursery relocation project in the Manchester area but he will be available to assist with horticultural projects in the South of England in 2019.

Kelvin’s qualifications are too numerous to mention but suffice to say he has the Master of Horticulture (RHS), an I.L.A.M (Dip) and an O.N.D Amenity Horticulture (Distinction) to name but a few.

He is also a member of the Institute of Horticulture, the Institute of Groundsmanship, the Royal Horticultural Society and the Arboricultural Association and has a wealth of experience and knowledge spanning over 30 years and which is second to none.

He is also a part-time tutor with the Horticultural Correspondence College in Devon where he tutors, amongst other things, both Level 2 and Level 3 Royal Horticultural Society Courses and ABC Level 2 Arboriculture and Forestry Courses.

And if that were not enough, Kelvin also teaches RHS Level 2 Practical Horticulture Courses and Level 3 Practical Courses at Sparsholt College in Hampshire.

During what little time he has left he loves to tend to his own garden and fit in a bit of long distance running.

Please join us in welcoming Kelvin to our team.  We hope that many existing and new customers will benefit from his extensive expertise and knowledge over the coming years.

If you would like to talk to Kelvin, please get in touch with us directly on 0300 303 8616 or email enquiries@wessexgroundsservices.co.uk.

Line Marking

Wessex Grounds Services have been helping the Jurassic Raptors with their American football pitches for several years and at different locations.  This year was very different as we invited our strategic supplies partner Rigby Taylor to initial mark a pitch using their fantastic robot marker.

This GPS- controlled machine made short work of installing a superb pitch, ready for the Raptors first game.  Bill Heinrich our contact at the Raptors was clearly delighted and stated that it was the best  pitch marking he had seen!

Many thanks to Simon Hughes of Rigby Taylor for installing his first American football pitch in the UK.

Health & Safety Update

Here at Wessex Grounds Services we take Health & Safety Seriously.

  • Health and safety is a top priority for Wessex Grounds Services.  All team members enjoyed a health and safety update from our health and safety consultant Martin Adlem.  Subjects covered included risk assessment, COSHH, electricity, noise, vibration and manual handling.
  • Our operatives have the very best equipment and we are constantly trialling safer and more environmentally friendly products.  All members of the team recently undertook a training course in the care and maintenance of strimmers, hedge cutters, blowers, chainsaws and cut off saws, to ensure they are always safe and in top condition for our customers.
  • DBS.  We are often asked if our staff are “vetted”.  Every single member of our team is routinely vetted and we do not employ staff without an enhanced DBS check.  So whether you are a school or a social care provider, our team can be relied upon.

We love seeing children have fun safely. Round about’s provide children with increased vestibular stimulation, they can increase development of kinaesthetic awareness and can help children develop strength, balance and co-ordination. Movements like these can be therapeutic to growing children.

It is essential to ensure the surrounding surfaces are safe. If you would like a quotation for your play ground then please contact us on 0300 303 8616.

Investing in the Latest Technology

“Wessex Grounds Services continue to invest in the very latest technology.  We have replaced our previous gang mower with a brand new Trimax Pegasus S4 roller mower, supplied by New Forest Farm Machinery, just in time for the new grass cutting season.

Our tractor driver Raymond Larder was quick to point out that the new machine has already reduced our fuel consumption by at least 20% based on onboard tractor computer analysis  and significantly increased productivity on site, so the machine is definitely good for the environment as well as our commercial success.

Raymond now has a first class armoury of equipment to compliment his new Deutz Fahr tractor.  He can cut large fields quickly and to a superb standard, he can overseed, deep tine, fertilise and scarify pitches as well as cut field hedges with his new Bomford long reach hedgecutter.

MD Stephen Harris added that although this equipment was expensive he was absolutely committed to increasing standards, improving efficiency and reducing the company’s carbon footprint.”

New Line Marking System

“Wessex Grounds Services continue to invest in new high performance equipment.  This new hard surface line marking system produces a straight and crisp line and is suitable for tennis, netball, volleyball and play markings in a range of colours.  However it does require a good eye and a steady hand!!  If you are interested  in a quotation please contact Amanda on 07795 515864.

Spring Sports Field Renovation

As the end of the season approaches, (and hopefully it was a fabulous and rewarding one), the hard work of pitch renovation needs to begin as soon as possible.

Winter pitches need attention in the spring in order to ensure that they are ready for play again by August.  The renovated pitch needs to sustain the whole of the up and coming season’s use. Having a great surface to play both rugby and football on can make a massive different to the performance of a team and consequently the results.

The main processes that should ideally be undertaken upon completion of a season are:

  • Scarification – This is the process used to remove debris, thatch (dead or partially decayed organic matter) and meadow grass from the pitch by raking it. This essential process ensures that the ground is ready for seeding.
  • Deep tine aeration– This process aerates and de-compacts the ground, allowing drainage of excess water and the free movement of air, encouraging deeper root growth.
  • Spiking/slitting – This process will allow surface aeration of the pitch and improve the profile of the soil. Spiking will allow the roots to develop better and therefore assist in the growth of the grass.
  • Top-Dressing – In order to assist with drainage, creating a good seed bed and levels, top-dressing is applied. The correct mix of soil and sand is applied to the pitch according to the pitches requirements
  • Fertilising – In order to optimize plant health/growth and protect against disease.
  • Over- seeding – The correct mix of seed is critical for quick germination and rapid establishment. The whole pitch can be overseeded, or if funds are tight just the pitch centre.

Once your pitch has been reinstated in the spring, then the cutting and maintenance needs to continue. Looking after a pitch correctly and maintaining it throughout the year may seem costly however it is a lot cheaper than having to replace a whole pitch or pay the fines for not providing an adequate playing surface for matches.  You do not need to do all of the above operations every year and we can advise you on the priorities for your pitch, to ensure your budget goes as far as possible.

Remember to plan ahead and if possible decommission a pitch early to allow seed germination in optimal conditions, especially if you do not have access to irrigation equipment and a good water supply.  Very often the ground is too dry for good germination by early May so a sowing in late March/April is always better.

We have all the machinery and expertise to help you with your pitch renovation programme this spring.   If you would like a quote or would like to discuss any of the above processes then please don’t hesitate to contact us on 0300 303 8616.

Considerations of a Landscaping Project.

Landscaping Projects should include considerations before initiation.

As with any project or redesign it is important that your money is well spent. Landscaping is no different whether you are dealing with hard or soft landscaping. Hard landscaping is the term that is used to describe the construction materials and elements in landscaping and the soft landscaping is used to describe the vegetative materials.

When designing your new landscape there are many considerations to be included. It is ok to have an idea or maybe an image of what you would like but then it must be worked out whether it will be feasible in that area, for that purpose and within that budget.

Here are some of the considerations that need to take place with landscaping.

  • Use & Purpose

Considering how the space is to be used. Some space will have more than one purpose. It maybe that the space will be for playing, sports, entertaining, relaxing or a formal area etc. It may require vehicle access on some of it or water features.

  • Who Will Use It

Having established the purpose or purposes of the area then next you need to consider who might be using it. Will it be primarily adults, children, pets or a combination? Will the area need disabled accessibility?

  • Soil Type & Nutrients

It is important to check for soil type before you start planning both the hard & soft elements of your landscaping. For example, it is no good planting a whole load of plants in a soil unsuitable for them as in no time at all they will all die. All that money spent and nothing to show for it. When considering landscaping the soil type is essential to know as it will hold the key to drainage, nutrients and behaviour. This allows one to then know which materials and vegetation will work and flourish.

  • Environment and Climate

You will need to consider which areas are sunny and shady. Work out which ways to face things in terms of maximising scenic views or making the most of the sun. Don’t forget to include the most common wind direction and the contours of the natural landscape especially when considering water flow, amount and drainage.

You will also need to consider any design constraints for example trees that have preservation orders, foundations and utilities etc.

  • Planting Zones

Knowing your zones will allow you to obtain plants that are correct for that location considering the environmental and climatic conditions.

  • Hydro Behaviour

Understanding how water behaves within the area is important. Hydro zoning will allow for plants with similar water requirements to be clustered together. This is also a consideration hard landscaping so that drainage can be created or pooling of water allowed.

  • Style

Last but not least you need to consider the aesthetic appeal and style of the landscaping.

Consider all of the above before initiating your landscaping project. If you are not confident or unsure about your soil type, the drainage or would just like a professional opinion, then please do not hesitate to Wessex Grounds Services on 0300 303 8616.
