Stephen Harris – Managing Director
Stephen Harris MIHort, MCMI, F.ALM, is the Managing Director and founder of Wessex Grounds Services Ltd. With a strong profile in the horticultural industry, he was previously elected as Regional Director of the Institute of Groundsmanship and Regional Chairman of The Association of Landscape Management. He is currently link governor for horticulture and also health and safety at Kingston Maurward College.
Qualified to degree level in Horticulture, Stephen has a sound understanding of the technical and scientific aspects of amenity horticulture. He has an IOSH qualification in health & safety, has undertaken training in quality assurance, is a trained assessor for the EFQM Excellence Model and has been an Environmental Services Emergency Planning Liaison Officer. Stephen recently completed a level 5 qualification in Leadership and Management with the Chartered Management Institute.
A Fellow of the Assocation of Landscape Management, Stephen is also a member of The Institute of Horticulture and The Chartered Management Institute. His career started as a trainee gardener for Weymouth and Portland Borough Council parks department. He attended Pershore College of Horticulture to study for the RHS Master of Horticulture and then moved into technical work at Brighton Parks Department where he also became a pesticides examiner, undertook teacher training (Cert.Ed) through Thames Polytechnic and taught horticulture and had a regular radio gardening slot on BBC Radio Sussex. He moved into supervisory and then management positions in grounds maintenance with Wiltshire County Council prior to joining the Grounds Services Team at Dorset County Council as Group Manager where he was responsible for seventy specialist staff dealing with grounds maintenance, hard & soft landscaping, arboricultural services, playing fields, synthetic surfaces and weed control, spread over several hundred sites.
