Wessex Grounds Services are delighted to support the Dorset Wildlife Trust and hope that we can help the Trust to make a real difference. In 2015 we undertook some innovative verge enhancement and maintenance trials in West Dorset, in conjunction with the DWT. We are hopeful that these trials will lead to a better understanding of grassland management locally.
One of our winter projects is to give the Dorset wildlife a helping hand by building bug hotels, bird boxes and hedgehog homes. We will be installing these in a number of school grounds.
Tristan Park has now passed his NPTC pesticides exams (PA1 and 6A) as well as his Level 2 Horticultural correspondence course.

Wessex Grounds Services is celebrating the completion of the first phase of an exciting landscaping project in Somerset. WGS is delighted to be working with a number of schools from 1 April. These new contracts are across Dorset and include schools in Christchurch as well as the north, west and east of the county. In preparation for these new contracts we have held two successful recruitment days in Dorchester and Blandford to increase our number of employees. We have been ordering extra equipment to support our new staff teams and await the delivery of an additional Mitsubishi L200 as well as a Teagle fertiliser spreader, Sisis Quadraplay and a Redexim Charterhouse Overseeder in the next couple of weeks. Our success in securing new work isn’t purely down to offering the most competitive price, customers are reassured that we are investing in our staff through the Living Wage accreditation as well as investing in new equipment and machinery which allows us to provide a reliable, efficient and innovative service.
In addition to our new school contracts we have also recently acquired the contract to provide the grounds maintenance at three Dorset Sure Start centres as well as a three year grass cutting contract for Dorchester town council cemeteries. As the approved installer for Notts Sport synthetic surfacing in the south west we are receiving a steady stream of surfacing enquiries and orders. This work relies on dry weather so we’re pleased to see a break in the rain as we are about to install a new play area for Wychavon District Council. We are also gearing up for spring sports pitch renovations, as the Rugby Football Union’s grounds maintenance contractor for Dorset we’ll have a number of pitches to work on across the county.

Wessex Grounds Services has today become one of the first organisations in this region and sector to become an accredited Living Wage Employer. The Living Wage is an hourly rate set independently and updated annually. It is based on the amount that an individual needs to earn to cover the basic costs of living. Accountancy firm KPMG has reported that 20% of all workers in the UK, nearly five million people, are paid below it.
The Living Wage campaign has been running for ten years and has lifted over 45,000 people out of poverty. An independent study of the business benefits of implementing a Living Wage policy in London found that more than 80% of employers believe that the Living Wage had enhanced the quality of the work of their staff, while absenteeism had fallen by approximately 25%. 66% of employers reported a significant impact on recruitment and retention within their organisation. 70% of employers felt that the Living Wage had increased consumer awareness of their organisation’s commitment to be an ethical employer.
Rebecca Vaughan, Office Manager at WGS said “Wessex Grounds Services is proud to become a living wage employer, we value every employee and we are committed to ensuring that all staff, permanent and subcontracted, are paid at least the Living Wage.”
Rhys Moore Director of the Living Wage Foundation added “The benefits the Living Wage brings to staff and business are clear. I welcome the leadership shown by Wessex Grounds Services on this important issue.”
