Line Marking

Wessex Grounds Services have been helping the Jurassic Raptors with their American football pitches for several years and at different locations.  This year was very different as we invited our strategic supplies partner Rigby Taylor to initial mark a pitch using their fantastic robot marker.

This GPS- controlled machine made short work of installing a superb pitch, ready for the Raptors first game.  Bill Heinrich our contact at the Raptors was clearly delighted and stated that it was the best  pitch marking he had seen!

Many thanks to Simon Hughes of Rigby Taylor for installing his first American football pitch in the UK.

  • Our operatives have the very best equipment and we are constantly trialling safer and more environmentally friendly products.  All members of the team recently undertook a training course in the care and maintenance of strimmers, hedge cutters, blowers, chainsaws and cut off saws, to ensure they are always safe and in top condition for our customers.

We love seeing children have fun safely. Round about’s provide children with increased vestibular stimulation, they can increase development of kinaesthetic awareness and can help children develop strength, balance and co-ordination. Movements like these can be therapeutic to growing children.

It is essential to ensure the surrounding surfaces are safe. If you would like a quotation for your play ground then please contact us on 0300 303 8616.

Buxton House receives 5* award

Wessex are proud to have helped Buxton House win a  5* award amongst stiff competition. Wessex Grounds Services currently have the contract to maintain the grounds which received a mention. Read the full write up in the local paper – or read below.

Buxton House, on Radipole Lane, was awarded a Star Award in Care South’s annual awards

Buxton House win 5* Award

A WEYMOUTH care home has been recognised for going the extra mile to create a home-from-home for its residents.

Buxton House, on Radipole Lane, was awarded the ‘Pride in our Home’ award at Care South’s annual Star Awards.

The award recognises care homes in the south of England that work hard to create welcoming surroundings and home like atmospheres for residents, family members and employees.

Buxton House residents praised staff for their excellent care and attention to detail, with flowers in the entrance hallways and communal areas, well-kept gardens, tasty food and a varied activities programme.

Janine May, home manager at Buxton House, said: “We are thrilled to be awarded the ‘Pride in our Home’ accolade. Our team works tirelessly to create a warm and inviting home for our residents and we are so proud that our efforts have been recognised and rewarded.

“I would like to congratulate each and every one of my staff for their contribution; their hard work is what makes Buxton House a caring and happy home.”

Staff collected their award at a ceremony held at AFC Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium which also recognised the achievements of over 50 staff who received formal qualifications throughout the year.

Susan Willoughby, chief executive of Care South, said: “Now in their seventh year, the Care South Stars Awards are a highlight of the year. It is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the professionalism, passion, and commitment to care that is delivered day in, day out by our staff across the company.

“Once again, we received an incredibly high number of nominations from colleagues, residents and service users. All our finalists and winners should be extremely proud of themselves for the exceptional commitment they have demonstrated to providing the highest quality care for our residents and service users.

“The Awards provide us with the chance to publicly acknowledge and thank our staff for their dedication and hard work, which makes such a huge difference to the lives and wellbeing of those we care for. We should also recognise the immense role teamwork has to play in helping us deliver the best quality care.”

Investing in the Latest Technology

“Wessex Grounds Services continue to invest in the very latest technology.  We have replaced our previous gang mower with a brand new Trimax Pegasus S4 roller mower, supplied by New Forest Farm Machinery, just in time for the new grass cutting season.

Our tractor driver Raymond Larder was quick to point out that the new machine has already reduced our fuel consumption by at least 20% based on onboard tractor computer analysis  and significantly increased productivity on site, so the machine is definitely good for the environment as well as our commercial success.

Raymond now has a first class armoury of equipment to compliment his new Deutz Fahr tractor.  He can cut large fields quickly and to a superb standard, he can overseed, deep tine, fertilise and scarify pitches as well as cut field hedges with his new Bomford long reach hedgecutter.

MD Stephen Harris added that although this equipment was expensive he was absolutely committed to increasing standards, improving efficiency and reducing the company’s carbon footprint.”

MUGA – Totnes, Devon

Surfacing of a MUGA for a School in Totnes, Devon

Wessex Grounds Services undertook the surfacing for Rhino Play Limited, based in Newton Abbot.  As we are a recommended Notts Sport installer, Notts Sport introduced us to quote for the customer and we won the work.

The MUGA design was requested by On Track Education based in Totnes, and in conjunction with Rhino Play and Notts Sport the design was agreed.  Wessex Grounds Services were sub contracted for the surfacing aspect of the work.

The work was planned and started on Tuesday 3rd Jan straight after the Xmas break. The weather was one factor that could have hampered this project however on this occasion we were lucky as the weather was lovely and sunny the first week back to work so the project was completed on target and on budget.

we did last week for a school in Totnes, Devon. We started this fresh in the New Year on Tuesday 3rd Jan and finished it on Thursday 5th Jan.  This is a MUGA (multi use games area) that can be used for a variety of sports.

Wessex Grounds Services celebrates new school grounds maintenance contracts

WGS is delighted to be working with a number of schools from 1 April. These new contracts are across Dorset and include schools in Christchurch as well as the north, west and east of the county.  In preparation for these new contracts we have held two successful recruitment days in Dorchester and Blandford to increase our number of employees. We have been ordering extra equipment to support our new staff teams and await the delivery of an additional Mitsubishi L200 as well as a Teagle fertiliser spreader, Sisis Quadraplay and a Redexim Charterhouse Overseeder in the next couple of weeks. Our success in securing new work isn’t purely down to offering the most competitive price, customers are reassured that we are investing in our staff through the Living Wage accreditation as well as investing in new equipment and machinery which allows us to provide a reliable, efficient and innovative service.

In addition to our new school contracts we have also recently acquired the contract to provide the grounds maintenance at three Dorset Sure Start centres as well as a three year grass cutting contract for Dorchester town council cemeteries. As the approved installer for Notts Sport synthetic surfacing in the south west we are receiving a steady stream of surfacing enquiries and orders. This work relies on dry weather so we’re pleased to see a break in the rain as we are about to install a new play area for Wychavon District Council. We are also gearing up for spring sports pitch renovations, as the Rugby Football Union’s grounds maintenance contractor for Dorset we’ll have a number of pitches to work on across the county.

Wessex Grounds Services becomes a Living Wage employer

Wessex Grounds Services has today become one of the first organisations in this region and sector to become an accredited Living Wage Employer. The Living Wage is an hourly rate set independently and updated annually. It is based on the amount that an individual needs to earn to cover the basic costs of living. Accountancy firm KPMG has reported that 20% of all workers in the UK, nearly five million people, are paid below it.

The Living Wage campaign has been running for ten years and has lifted over 45,000 people out of poverty. An independent study of the business benefits of implementing a Living Wage policy in London found that more than 80% of employers believe that the Living Wage had enhanced the quality of the work of their staff, while absenteeism had fallen by approximately 25%. 66% of employers reported a significant impact on recruitment and retention within their organisation. 70% of employers felt that the Living Wage had increased consumer awareness of their organisation’s commitment to be an ethical employer.

Rebecca Vaughan, Office Manager at WGS said “Wessex Grounds Services is proud to become a living wage employer, we value every employee and we are committed to ensuring that all staff, permanent and subcontracted, are paid at least the Living Wage.”

Rhys Moore Director of the Living Wage Foundation added “The benefits the Living Wage brings to staff and business are clear. I welcome the leadership shown by Wessex Grounds Services on this important issue.”
